Why does the hospital not want to take my major medical coverage?

Something to look out for is the medical provider -- most often hospitals -- refusing to take your major medical coverage.  Instead, the hospital will want to put a lien on your claims to try to get more of its bill paid.

I have a section on this website that talks about how you should pay for your medical care if you are injured in an accident of any kind.  Remember, the hospital will have a contract with your insurance company providing procedures and services be paid on a fee schedule that will pay a fraction of your entire bill (e.g., $7,000 might be paid on a $20,000 bill).  If the at fault party’s liability carrier pays instead of the major medical insurance company, the hospital can get the entire $20,000.  The problem with this is that if the hospital is successful and the at-fault party’s insurance pays the bill, it will take $13,000 away from you.

You want to avoid this situation if at all possible.  You do this by demanding that the hospital bill the major medical insurance company immediately.  Tell the hospital you have no medical payments coverage (if there is medical payments coverage, then the hospital has the right to seek it first before billing the major medical coverage).  You might also mention that you have no intention of ever pursuing a claim against the other driver, and accordingly, if the hospital wants to be paid, it had better bill it to your major medical coverage.
